Palette: A Coffee Table for Color Mixing Inspired by Josef Albers

Bringing Art and Design Together

Palette is a coffee table that combines art, design, and functionality, allowing users to engage in color experiments and tailor their space to their preferences. Inspired by Josef Albers' iconic "Homage to the Square" series, this innovative table offers a unique and dynamic way to mix colors and create different moods.

The Palette table, designed by Rita Kettaneh of Kray Studio, takes inspiration from Albers' exploration of color interactions through nested squares. By deconstructing the squares into three-dimensional space, Palette preserves the play on transparency and encourages users to participate in color experiments, just as Albers advocated.

What sets Palette apart is its modular and dynamic design. The top layers of the table can be easily interchanged among tables, similar to Albers' "platters to serve color." As the layers overlap, new color mixes are created, allowing users to explore endless possibilities and adapt the table to their interior and state of mind.

The construction of Palette involves precision and craftsmanship. The top section is made up of CNC laser-cut and bent steel sheets, assembled through welding. The base, made of stainless steel, undergoes a similar process. The top is powder-coated and includes two acrylic sheets, while the base has a brushed finish, adding a touch of elegance to the design.

With dimensions of 500mm x 500mm x 435mm and weighing 13.6kg, Palette is a compact and versatile addition to any living space. Its sleek and minimalist design allows it to seamlessly blend into various interior styles, while its functionality adds a unique touch.

Palette was developed over the course of a year and three months, starting in December 2018 in Kornet Chehwan, Lebanon, and completed in February 2020 in Mazraat Yachouh, Lebanon. The design process involved extensive research and experimentation with color schemes, overlapping sequences of acrylic samples, and Albers' configurations.

The design of Palette presented several challenges that were overcome through creative problem-solving. The base had to embody the concept of the square while complementing the top's planar form and silhouette. Multiple designs were assessed through cardboard mockups and 3D modeling software to achieve the desired result.

Palette has received recognition for its innovative design. It was awarded the Iron A' Design Award in the Furniture Design category in 2020. This prestigious award is given to well-designed, practical, and innovative creations that meet professional and industrial requirements. Palette's integration of industry best practices and competent technical characteristics contribute to a better world.

Palette is not just a coffee table; it is a work of art that invites users to explore the world of color. With its modular and dynamic design, it empowers individuals to create their own unique spaces and adapt them to their mood and preferences. Inspired by Josef Albers' vision, Palette brings art and design together in a functional and visually stunning piece.
